Orange peels are rich in fiber, vitamins, and disease-fighting polyphenols. They also contain limonene, a chemical that may protect against skin cancer.

Orange peels are rich in several nutrients, including fiber, vitamin C, and plant compounds like polyphenols. One tablespoon (6 grams) of orange peel provides nearly three times more than the inner fruit. The same serving also packs about four times more fiber.

Studies show that diets high in vitamin C and fiber benefit heart and digestive health and may protect against certain types of cancer. Orange peel also contains good amounts of provitamin A, folate, riboflavin, thiamine, vitamin B6, and calcium. Plus, it’s rich in plant compounds called polyphenols, which may help prevent and manage many chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, and Alzheimer’s disease. One test-tube study found that orange peels' total polyphenol content and activity were significantly higher than in the actual fruit.

Thanks to their excellent vitamin C content, orange peels help break down congestion and cleanse the lungs. Vitamin C also boosts immunity, and this helps ward off and prevent lung infections. The peels are rich in pectin, a fiber that regulates blood sugar levels. This can help people with diabetes. Orange peels are rich in a flavonoid called hesperidin, which has been shown to lower blood cholesterol and blood pressure levels.

Potential Allergen: Allergies to citrus fruits are rare but occur. Citrus fruits include oranges, Limes, Lemons, and grapefruit. In relatively rare cases, a citrus allergy can cause anaphylaxis. People who develop contact dermatitis after touching these fruits are most likely allergic to limonene, a chemical found in the peels of citrus fruits.
