Honeybush: This is a South African herb made from the Cyclopia plant. It only grows in South Africa. The name comes from the scent of Cyclopia yellow flowers, which smell similar to honey. It has been traditionally used to treat coughs and symptoms of menopause, as well as aid digestion. It has also been used for treating lungs and breathing related diseases such as tuberculosis and catarrh. The antioxidants it contains help scavenge free radicals and prevent many different diseases, provide anti-aging benefits and boosts the immune system.
Potential Allergen: Although rare, Honeybush can cause an allergic reaction if you are allergic to this herb. You must seek medical attention immediately if you have a severe allergic reaction.
Hibiscus: This herb contains high amounts of Vitamin C. Rich in antioxidants, Vitamin C helps boost your immune system and may help to prevent cell damage caused by free radicals in the body. This can reduce your risk of developing significant health complications like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Caution: Hibiscus is often intercropped with peanuts and may produce a response in those with severe peanut allergies.
Potential Allergen: Hibiscus is a member of the Malvaceae family and may cause allergic reactions in people allergic to other plants in this family, such as hollyhocks. Hibiscus also contains tannins and may cause a response in people with a tannin allergy.
Avoid If: Pregnant; known as the emmenagogue effect, hibiscus tea and extracts can encourage uterine blood flow to help stimulate menstruation.
Peppermint: Peppermint (mentha piperita) is a hybrid of watermint and spearmint cultivated near London in 1750. It grows almost everywhere. Peppermint has been used worldwide to calm queasy stomachs and quell indigestion. It is a general stimulant. A strong cup of peppermint tea circulates quickly and acts more powerfully than any liquor stimulant. It has a long history as a digestive aid and a treatment for cough, colds, and fever symptoms. It is also suitable for nausea and vomiting.
Caution: Peppermint tea causes drug interactions. So, people on blood pressure and diabetic medications must avoid peppermint tea.
Potential Allergen: Although rare, if you are allergic to peppermint tea or experience an allergic reaction, please consult your healthcare provider before using it again.
Avoid if: Pregnant or breastfeeding as Peppermint tea may cause uterine blood flow. Therefore, pregnant and nursing women should avoid its intake.
Lavender: This popular ingredient has long been known to aid with anxiety, depression, insomnia, digestive discomfort, and gas. Lavender (Lavandula officianalis) has been used for centuries as a general tonic, sedative, antispasmodic, diuretic, digestive aid, and gas remedy.
Caution: Lavender might cause sleepiness. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.
Potential Allergen: Although rare, Lavender is known to cause an allergic reaction in some people. Any allergic reaction to lavender is usually a delayed-type hypersensitivity. This means the response is not immediate and can take up to a few days to appear. It’s more likely to happen after increased use and exposure to the chemical elements of lavender.
Avoid If: Pregnant, nursing, or taking medicines that cause sleepiness, known as sedatives.
As with every herb, please do your research before use.
