Caution: Cascara Sagrada should not be taken for more than a week at a time. Long Term use can cause severe hydration and rapid loss of electrolytes, leading to various health concerns. This herb should never be used by pregnant women or nursing mothers.

Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus Purshiana) is a shrub native to western North America whose bark is processed for medicinal purposes. Cascara Sagrada contains compounds called anthraquinones that have powerful laxative effects. 

-Cascara Sagrada is primarily used to treat constipation. The anthraquinones contained in the bark inhibit intestinal absorption of water and electrolytes. The stool volume increases as it takes on excess water- putting pressure on the colon, stimulating muscle contractions & then speeding the clearing of the bowel. 

-Unlike Aloe and Senna as laxatives, Cascara sagrada is notably gentler. Generally speaking, cascara sagrada will induce a bowel movement within 8-12 hours of taking a dose. 

Avoid If: You are pregnant or breastfeeding, as this herb can cause diarrhea in nursing babies. Do not give to children.

Avoid If: You have Appendicitis, Crohn's Disease, Stomach Pain and Ulcers, and Ulcerative Colitis.
